Will the Minister of

AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE be pleased to state:-


(a) whether the Government has launched a pilot programme for promotion of nutri-farming and introducing new crop varieties that are rich in micro-nutrients such as iron-rich bajra, protein-rich maize and zinc-rich wheat; and

(b) if so, the details thereof including the quantum of funds earmarked for the implementation of this project?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) & (b) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 121 DUE FOR REPLY ON 12TH FEBRUARY, 2019.
(a) & (b): A pilot scheme on Nutri-farms-a sub scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) was launched in 2013-14 to promote cultivation of bio-fortified food crops enriched with critical micro-nutrients like iron-rich bajra, protein-rich maize and zinc-rich wheat to improve the nutritional status of the most vulnerable sections of the population of the country. This pilot scheme was sub-summed under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) during the year 2014-15. Now, Government of India has launched a Sub-Mission on Nutri-Cereals (Millets) under NFSM from 2018-19. The foodgrain crops included under NFSM are NFSM-Rice, NFSM-Wheat, NFSM-Pulses, NFSM-Coarse Cereals and NFSM-Nutri Cereals. NFSM-Nutri Cereals is being implemented in 202 districts of 14 states of the country. The North Eastern (8) and hilly States of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir have been given flexibility to implement programme on nutri-cereals. Under this programme, various High Yielding Varieties/ Hybrids developed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through National Agricultural Research System (NARS), which are rich in micro-nutrients such as iron-rich bajra, protein-rich maize and zinc-rich wheat, are being promoted.
An amount of Rs. 92.62 crore has been allocated for implementation of NFSM – Nutri Cereals for the year 2018-19. The state-wise details are annexed. Under NFSM, assistance is being given to the farmers through State Governments for organizing various types of demonstrations on improved production technologies, seed production & distribution, need based inputs and cropping system based training etc. Besides, the nutria-rich varieties are also being promoted through Front Line Demonstrations on farmers’ field by ICAR Institutes/State Agricultural Universities.
